Balloon Baseball
Baseball adapted for small spaces where students hit a balloon with a pool noodle and the bases are hoops. The balloon floats slowly, so every student can hit successfully and practice the basic rules of baseball safely.
How to play
- Set up two diamonds with 4 hoops about 16 ft apart in a small gym or cleared classroom; form four teams of 6–7, two per diamond (3 min).
- The batter tosses the balloon to themselves and hits it with the pool noodle held in both hands; they get 3 tries to send it past a line 6 ft out.
- After the hit, they run the hoops, stepping inside each one, and may stop at any hoop.
- The batter is out if the defense catches the balloon before it touches the floor; if it lands, three different fielders must touch it and bring it to home hoop, and then any runners not inside a hoop go back to the last hoop they touched.
- Each runner who reaches home scores 1 run; teams switch when everyone has batted (7 min per inning, 14 min total).
Rules
- Safety: use the noodle only to hit the balloon, and set it on the floor before running.
- Fielders stay at least 6 ft from the batter.
- Only one runner per hoop.
Variations
Easier
A teammate tosses the balloon to the batter, and hoops move in to 13 ft.
Standard
Self-toss, hoops 16 ft apart, and three fielder touches to stop the runners.
Harder
The batter must swing with one hand, and the balloon has to pass a line 13 ft out.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: bat seated with a short noodle, and have a buddy run or score by reaching the first hoop only.
- Autism or shyness: allow a practice swing without scoring before their turn and explain the batting order ahead of time.
- Skill level: use bigger balloons for students who have trouble making contact.
Learning goals
- Hit an object in the air with a long implement held in both hands.
- Run the bases in order and decide when to stop.
- Understand and follow the basic rules of baseball.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
This is the perfect activity for rainy days or small spaces. Keep extra balloons handy and move chairs and desks out of the way first; remind runners to look ahead, not back at the balloon, while running.
