Ball vs. Runner Race
In groups of four, three students pass the ball around a triangle while the fourth runs a lap around it; they count the passes completed during the lap. It warms everyone up and proves that the ball travels faster than any player.
How to play
- Form groups of four and set up a 5-yard cone triangle for each group, with a larger triangle 2 yards outside it for the runner.
- Activation (2 minutes): all four jog around the big triangle passing the ball nonstop.
- Three students stand on the inner cones and the fourth at the start of the outer course; on the signal, the runner runs one full lap outside.
- While they run, the three passers pass in order and count each caught pass out loud; when the runner finishes, they shout their total.
- Rotate: the runner takes a cone and someone else runs; each student runs twice (about 5 minutes) and the group records its best score.
- Wrap-up (2 minutes): repeat with bounce passes and discuss why the ball always "wins" against the runner.
Rules
- The runner stays outside the outer cones with no shortcuts.
- Passers don't leave their cone: the pass must reach a partner's hands.
- The runner never cuts through the inside of the triangle so they don't get hit by a pass.
- If the ball drops, pick it up and keep counting from where you were.
Variations
Easier
4-yard triangle and bounce passes allowed.
Standard
5-yard triangle with chest passes or one-handed team handball passes.
Harder
6-yard triangle, non-dominant hand only, or switch direction on the signal.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: always be a passer, or travel a smaller outer triangle in a wheelchair.
- Students with autism or shy students: let those who prefer it be the official counter and preview the rotation order with numbers.
- Lower fitness: jog the outer lap and walk briskly on the second turn.
Learning goals
- Discover through play that passing is faster than running with the ball.
- Pass and catch quickly and accurately under time pressure.
- Cooperate as a group to beat your own record.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 6
- cones: 36
Teacher tip
This game is a perfect lead-in to team play in team handball or basketball: at the end, ask which is faster, dribbling or passing. Keep at least 3 yards between outer triangles.
