Ball Snatch and Escape
A partner reaction duel: facing each other with a ball on the floor between them, students touch the body parts the teacher calls, and on "Ball!" one grabs it and escapes to their line while the other tries to tag them.
How to play
- Form pairs facing each other 1.5 yards apart with a ball on the floor right in the middle; mark each student's safe line with cones 8 yards behind them.
- Quick warm-up (1 minute): easy high knees in place and ankle circles while waiting for the first call.
- The teacher calls body parts ("head," "knees," "shoulders") and both partners touch them with both hands; on "Ball!" they try to grab it.
- Whoever gets the ball runs to their safe line; the partner chases and tries to tag their back before they cross it.
- Scoring: 1 point for reaching your line with the ball, 1 point for tagging the runner; walk back to the middle and repeat.
- Play 3 blocks of 2 minutes; after each block, students slide one spot down the line to get a new partner.
Rules
- Tag with an open hand on the back, no pushing or grabbing clothing.
- When reaching for the ball, keep heads up: bend the knees, not the back.
- If the teacher uses a trick word like "Bawl!" or "Bell!" and you touch the ball, your partner gets a point.
- Pairs stay in their own running lane without crossing into neighboring lanes.
Variations
Easier
Start 2 yards from the ball and run only 5 yards to the line.
Standard
Start 1.5 yards from the ball with an 8-yard escape.
Harder
Start seated or in push-up position and use trick words that sound like "ball."
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: grab the ball from on top of a cone at hand height and score only for who grabs it first.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the teacher shows picture cards of body parts and a red card for the ball.
- Lower fitness: cut the escape distance to 5 yards and sit out one turn in three.
Learning goals
- React quickly to a verbal cue and ignore trick signals.
- Decide instantly whether to escape or chase depending on who gets the ball.
- Use safe contact and accept the result of each duel.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balls: 13
- cones: 26
Teacher tip
To prevent head bumps, ask students to squat with a straight back and eyes forward. Running lanes must be parallel and well spaced, with at least 2 yards between pairs.
