Balancing Pencil: Calm Control on One Finger
Each student tries to balance a pencil on a fingertip, palm or back of the hand, first seated and then standing. The focus it takes helps bring heart rates down at the end of class.

How to play
- Seated, pencil upright on an open palm for 10 seconds (1 min).
- Pencil lying across one finger: find the balance point and hold (2 min).
- Standing, pencil upright on the palm, eyes on the top, breathing easy (2 min).
- Calm challenge: move the balanced pencil from palm to back of the hand without dropping it (2 min).
Rules
- Use an unsharpened pencil or point it down on the palm, never near the face.
- If it falls, pick it up slowly and start again.
- Go at your own pace, no competing.
- Quiet so everyone can focus.
Variations
Easier
Pencil lying flat on the palm.
Standard
Upright on the palm and flat on a finger.
Harder
Upright on one finger or using the other hand.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: balance it flat on the back of the hand by feel.
- Students with tremor or motor difficulties: use a wider object such as an eraser or flat pencil case.
- Students who get frustrated: stay with the seated version and count their seconds.
Learning goals
- Improve fine hand control.
- Focus and wind down.
- Accept trial and error calmly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pencils: 30
Teacher tip
Tell them to watch the top of the pencil, not the hand: balance improves right away. If there aren't enough pencils, capped pens work.
