Balanced Panniers: Load the Bike and Test the Handling
Students load their bikes for a bike-touring trip, first badly and then correctly, and test on a course how handling changes. They learn to distribute weight to ride stable and safe.
How to play
- Bike and helmet check: brakes, tire pressure, wheel quick-releases, and helmet fit (5 min).
- Loading principles: weight low and centered, even on both sides, nothing hanging from the handlebars or touching the spokes, and everything strapped tight (4 min).
- Trial A: a cone course (wide slalom, tight turn, and stop) with the load badly placed (all on one side or up high) at walking speed. A partner observes (8 min).
- Trial B: the same course with the load properly balanced. The partner times it and logs cones hit and foot-downs (8 min).
- In groups, students write a loading checklist for the bike tour (7 min).
- Unload the bikes and put gear away (3 min).
Rules
- Helmets buckled for the whole course.
- The badly placed load is light, and trial A is always at walking speed.
- Nothing can hang near the spokes or brakes.
- Riders start one at a time, 5 m apart.
Variations
Easier
Only the balanced-load trial and a course with no tight turn.
Standard
Trials A and B with partner observation.
Harder
Load the equivalent of a two-day trip and repeat the course with a shorter stopping zone.
Adaptations
- No bike of their own: serves as observer and helps load; rotates with a partner if sharing a bike.
- Nervous on a bike: trial B only, very slow, on a straight course.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: starts and stops signaled with a flag.
Learning goals
- Load a bike in a stable, safe way.
- Analyze how weight distribution affects handling.
- Prepare a checklist for a bike-touring trip.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bikes: 10
- helmets: 10
- backpacks: 10
- bungee cords: 20
- full water bottles: 20
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
Schools rarely have panniers: two small backpacks strapped to a rear rack with bungee cords work well. Ask for bikes ahead of time and keep a pump and hex key handy. The usual mistake is loose bungees that let the load slide toward the wheel.
