Balance Stick: Stretching Challenges
Stretches that use the stick for support, mixed with small balance challenges using the stick itself. The cool-down stays active with a playful edge.
How to play
- Hamstring and calf stretches using the stick upright like a cane; then shoulders, holding the stick behind your back (2 min).
- Challenge 1: balance the stick upright on your palm as long as you can, first right hand, then left (2 min).
- One-legged quad stretch leaning on the stick, and trunk twists with the stick across your shoulders (2 min).
- Challenge 2: in circles of six, each player holds their stick upright on the floor; on the signal, everyone lets go and steps right to catch the next stick before it falls (2 min).
Rules
- No bouncing in stretches: hold the position without pain.
- The stick always points at the ceiling or the floor, never at anyone's face.
- In the circle challenge, let go only when the group gives the call.
Variations
Easier
Challenge 2 in pairs instead of circles of six.
Standard
Circles of six with one step to the right.
Harder
Circles of six with a step and a half, or switching direction on the signal.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: do the upper-body stretches and palm-balance challenge; in the circle, classmates leave the stick within reach.
- Ankle injury: stretch seated on a bench and do only the palm challenge.
- Students lacking confidence: try challenge 2 with a trusted partner before joining a circle.
Learning goals
- Stretch the muscle groups used in hockey.
- Work on balance and coordination through play.
- Coordinate with a group on a shared challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floorball sticks: 30
Teacher tip
Floorball sticks are light and won't hurt if they fall, but check none has a loose blade. Count down the circle signal yourself so everyone lets go together.
