Balance Star: Reach Your Foot in Eight Directions
Standing on one foot at the center of a tape star on the floor, each student reaches the other leg as far as possible in each direction to tap with the toes. It works balance, ankle stability and flexibility under control.
How to play
- In pairs, each with an eight-point star made with tape or chalk and a small cone (1 min).
- One partner stands on one foot in the center and lightly taps the tape with the other foot in each direction, returning to center without stepping down (2 min).
- The partner places the cone at the best reach in three directions: front, side and back (2 min).
- Switch roles, then switch standing legs (3 min).
- Each student shares which direction and which leg was hardest; remove the tape (1 min).
Rules
- The reaching foot only taps; it doesn't take weight.
- The heel of the standing foot stays down.
- Compare your two legs, not yourself with others.
Variations
Easier
Three directions only: front, side and back, hand on partner for support.
Standard
Eight directions with a cone marking three of them.
Harder
Hands off hips, no support, and a three-second pause at each reach.
Adaptations
- Visually impaired students: make the star with thin taped-down string they can feel with their foot.
- Wheelchair users: do an arm version, reaching to cones in eight directions without leaning on the chair.
- Students with an ankle or knee injury: use the healthy leg only, or skip it and record scores.
Learning goals
- Improve dynamic balance and ankle stability.
- Spot differences between your legs.
- Stretch with control after effort.
Equipment for a class of 25
- masking tape: 3
- small cones: 30
Teacher tip
This is a simple take on the Star Excursion Balance Test used in injury prevention. With one star per pair, setup is quick; tape them before class.
