Balance Passport
Each student carries a card with eight balances ranked from easiest to hardest, and a partner signs each stamp once the balance is held for 10 seconds. Students work on static balance, setting personal goals, and peer observation.
How to play
- Hand every student a passport with 8 pictured balances: stork stand, stork with eyes closed, airplane, V-sit, side plank on knees, bird dog, airplane with arms back, and full side plank (2 min).
- Quickly demonstrate each pose and show how to count 10 slow seconds: "one Mississippi, two Mississippi" (3 min).
- In pairs with one mat for every two students, the first student tries balance number 1; if they hold it 10 seconds without touching down, the partner signs the box (4 min).
- Partners alternate, one attempt each. Nobody moves to the next stamp until they earn the one before, but everyone moves at their own pace (6 min).
- At the 15-minute mark, each student circles the stamp they want to earn next class and tells their partner (2 min).
- Wrap-up: ask which tip helps the most, like looking at a fixed spot or tightening the stomach muscles (3 min).
Rules
- A stamp is signed only if the partner saw the full 10 seconds.
- If you lose your balance, step down with control instead of throwing yourself to the floor.
- Eyes-closed balances are done in the middle of the mat with your partner right beside you.
Variations
Easier
Hold each balance for 5 seconds and allow one hand touch on the wall for stamps 3 and 7.
Standard
Hold each balance for 10 seconds with no help to earn the stamp.
Harder
To earn a stamp, students must hold the balance on both sides of the body.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: prepare an alternate passport with seated trunk and arm balances.
- Visual impairment: replace pictures with large-print descriptions and let the student feel the partner's pose before trying it.
- Fitness level: students who finish early become helpers for another pair and give verbal tips without touching.
Learning goals
- Hold static balances of increasing difficulty.
- Set a realistic personal goal for the next class.
- Observe a partner honestly and verify their work.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 13
- passport cards: 25
- pencils: 13
Teacher tip
Keep the passports in a box so they can be reused for several classes; seeing their progress is hugely motivating. Watch for sagging hips in the side plank, the most common mistake.
