Badminton Team Relay to 21
Badminton matches between teams of four in which each player plays one leg and the score carries over up to 21, like a team relay. Students work on individual responsibility within a group, managing a running score and supporting teammates.
How to play
- Form teams of four in pinnies and pair teams on each court. Each team sets its playing order (1, 2, 3, 4) before starting (3 min).
- The first players from each team play singles until one team reaches 6 points; then the second players take over and continue the score to 11.
- Third players go to 16 and fourth players to 21. Waiting players keep score and cheer from the sideline (each match takes about 7 minutes).
- Play two matches against different teams; in the second, each team must change its order (14 min total).
- Wrap-up: each team discusses which leg was decisive and how they encouraged a teammate who was behind (5 min).
Rules
- Rally scoring: every rally is a point, whoever serves.
- Swap players quickly with a high five to the teammate leaving.
- Waiting players stay outside the sidelines and don't step on court for shuttles during a rally.
Variations
Easier
Shorter legs up to 15 total points, with short serves only.
Standard
Four-leg relay to 21 points.
Harder
The final leg is doubles, played by the two players who scored the fewest points.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays their leg on a half court against an opponent also on a half court.
- Shy students: may choose their leg, and the team agrees on positive encouragement for them.
- Ability differences: balance teams so each leg matches players of similar level.
Learning goals
- Take responsibility for one's own leg within the team result.
- Adjust play to the running score.
- Encourage and support teammates regardless of the result.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rackets: 25
- shuttlecocks: 12
- nets: 3
- pinnies: 25
Teacher tip
Balance teams before class so every leg is competitive. Praise encouragement out loud; it matters as much as the points.
