Badminton Step-Back Rally
A partner badminton rally where the distance grows every time the pair gets five hits in a row and shrinks after misses. Students practice the high hit, adjusting force to the distance, and setting improvement goals.
How to play
- Stretch a long rope about 5 ft high across the gym and mark 4 flat disc cones on each side at 3, 6, 9, and 12 ft from the rope; form pairs with one partner on each side (3 min).
- Pairs start at the 3 ft cone and rally over the rope with soft hits.
- After 5 hits in a row without the shuttle dropping, both step back to the next cone; after two drops in a row, they step forward one.
- Before starting, each pair sets a goal, such as reaching the 9 ft cone, and checks whether they reach it in 5 minutes (5 min).
- Switch partners for a second round with a new goal; at the 12 ft cone, overhead hits are required (8 min).
Rules
- Safety: each pair stays in its own 10 ft-wide lane and does not go into the next lane to hit.
- Hits must go over the rope.
- Step back only when both partners agree they made 5 hits.
Variations
Easier
Move back after 3 hits in a row, and allow catching and tossing the shuttle before hitting.
Standard
Five hits in a row to step back, two drops in a row to step forward.
Harder
At each cone, hits only count if partners alternate forehand and backhand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play seated or with support, with their cones marked at half the distance.
- Visual impairment: use a shuttle that contrasts strongly with the background and tie colored ribbons on the rope.
- Skill level: start with a balloon in the first round and switch to a shuttle in the second.
Learning goals
- Keep a badminton rally going over a rope.
- Adjust hitting force to the partner's distance.
- Set a realistic goal and check whether it was met.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rackets: 25
- shuttlecocks: 15
- flat disc cones: 96
- long rope: 2
Teacher tip
Pairs often want to move back too soon; remind them a record only counts with a controlled rally. Put pairs of similar skill next to each other so goals stay realistic.
