Badminton Home Base Recovery Game
A badminton game in pairs where each player must step back on a disc cone in the middle of their court after every shot. Students practice recovering to base position, badminton footwork, and endurance in short bursts of effort.
How to play
- Place a flat disc cone in the middle of each half court; make pairs and, if courts are short, groups of 4 where two play and two observe.
- For 3 minutes, without a shuttle, practice footwork: from the disc, step out to a corner, shadow a swing, and return with side shuffles or crossover steps.
- For 6 minutes, cooperative play: the pair keeps the shuttle in the air and each player must touch their disc before hitting again; they count consecutive hits.
- For 6 minutes, point play: a player who hits without first stepping on their disc loses the rally; the observer checks this rule and swaps with the player every 3 minutes.
- For 3 minutes, final challenge: the hitter tries to send the shuttle to the corner farthest from the opponent's disc.
- Finish with 2 minutes of walking recovery while discussing where to position the body to reach every corner faster.
Rules
- Step on the disc, don't jump on it, to avoid slipping.
- Keep the space between courts clear so nobody collides when backing up.
- If you feel very tired, sit out one round as an observer.
Variations
Easier
Return to the disc only after every other shot.
Standard
Return to the disc after every shot, with cooperative and then competitive play.
Harder
Replace the disc with a small hoop and require both feet inside before hitting.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: place the disc closer and have the partner send the shuttle only to reachable sides.
- Visual impairment: replace the disc with a brightly colored hoop and use a high-contrast shuttle.
- Lower fitness: alternate 1 minute of play with 1 minute of active rest and light stretching.
Learning goals
- Recover to base position after every shot.
- Perform side and backward footwork with balance.
- Pace effort during short, intense rallies.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rackets: 25
- shuttlecocks: 13
- net: 3
- flat disc cones: 26
Teacher tip
This is a demanding drill, so keep rounds to 3 minutes or less. The common mistake is turning your back to the shuttle to get home, so cue side shuffles.
