Backpedal and Hip-Turn Reaction Drill
A backpedal drill that transitions into forward running with a hip turn toward the side a partner signals. Widely used by defenders in soccer, basketball, and flag football, it builds reaction, turning technique, and safe deceleration.
How to play
- Pairs in 15 m lanes marked with cones: the worker stands on the start line facing the partner, who is the signaler 3 m away.
- Backpedal form (2 min): 2 trips of 15 m with short steps, weight on the balls of the feet, chest slightly forward, and active arms.
- Hip turn (2 min): backpedal 5 m and, at the cone, open the hips toward the called side and sprint 5 m on a diagonal; 2 each side.
- React (2 min): the signaler moves with the worker and points left or right at a random moment; turn to that side and sprint 5 m.
- Switch roles (2 min): partners trade places and the new signaler may fake with the arm before the real signal.
Rules
- Eyes stay forward during the backpedal, so lanes must be clear of any obstacles.
- Keep at least 3 m between lanes.
- The sprint is at 80% and you stop within 3 steps before the cone.
- The signaler stays 3 m away and never steps into the runner's path.
Variations
Easier
Call the side before the start and turn without the sprint.
Standard
Random partner signal and a 5 m sprint after the turn.
Harder
The signaler tosses a ball to the chosen side; turn, sprint, and catch it before the second bounce.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the trunk turn and reaction seated or by pushing a wheelchair toward the called side.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: the signal is already visual; make sure the signaler stays in the student's line of sight.
- Lower fitness: walk briskly backward and jog after the turn.
Learning goals
- Run backward with balanced, safe posture.
- Perform a hip turn to both sides without losing speed.
- React to a visual cue with the right decision.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
A typical mistake is crossing the feet or opening the wrong foot; teach 'open the gate' with the foot on the turning side. Check the surface before starting, since backpedaling means you can't see obstacles.
