Back-to-Back Breathing
In pairs, sitting back to back, students feel their partner's breathing through their back and try to sync their breathing rhythms. It builds belly and rib breathing, body awareness and shared relaxation.
How to play
- Make pairs of similar height, sitting on the floor back to back, legs crossed and hands on knees (1 min).
- Everyone closes their eyes and breathes normally for 30 seconds, just noticing the partner's back (0.5 min).
- Next, breathe into the lower back, feeling it expand against the partner's (1 min).
- Without talking, try to match the rhythm: both breathe in and out together, slower and slower (1.5 min).
- Then alternate: as one breathes in, the other breathes out, like a gentle seesaw (1 min).
- Move apart slowly and talk about which phase felt most relaxing (1 min).
Rules
- Don't push or lean your full weight on your partner.
- Work in silence, no talking or laughing.
- Never force a breath; if you feel dizzy, breathe normally.
- Students may choose a partner they're comfortable touching.
Variations
Easier
Only notice the partner's breathing, without trying to sync.
Standard
Sync breathing together, then switch to the seesaw.
Harder
Groups of three in a triangle, back to back, all breathing at the same pace.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the partner sits behind the wheelchair and rests a hand on the student's back.
- Students with autism or who avoid touch: place one hand on their own belly and one on the chest, sitting beside a partner without contact.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: no change needed; the cues are by touch.
Learning goals
- Feel and control belly and rib breathing.
- Match their own breathing rhythm to someone else's.
- Build relaxation and trust between classmates.
Teacher tip
Let students pick partners to avoid discomfort with contact. If syncing is hard, set the pace with soft claps during the first round.
