Back Set Trios
In trios lined up in a row, the middle player receives a high ball and sets it backward over their head to the teammate behind them. Students practice the back set, body position under the ball, and full arm extension on the release.
How to play
- Trios in a straight line: A and C on the ends, 26 feet apart; B in the middle facing A. Mark spots with cones (2 min).
- A tosses high to B; B gets under it, arches slightly, and back sets over their head to C (4 min).
- C catches, B turns around, and back sets toward A. Rotate the middle player every 10 sets.
- Phase 2 (5 min): A and C forearm pass to B instead of tossing, like a serve receive.
- Phase 3 (4 min): A calls 'Front!' or 'Back!' and B sets to that side; count the sets that arrive high to A or C.
Rules
- The middle player does not look back before setting: the ball must leave over their head.
- The set must rise at least 3 feet above the receiver's head.
- Keep at least 13 feet between trios so nobody collides while moving backward.
Variations
Easier
Shorten the distance to 16 feet, and let the middle player catch and toss backward with two hands before setting.
Standard
Back set over 13 feet off a toss, then off a forearm pass.
Harder
The middle player starts facing the net and only hears which way to set at the last moment.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: take the tossing role seated or back set seated to a closer partner.
- Hearing impairment: signal 'front' or 'back' with an agreed arm gesture.
- Developing players: use a soft ball and higher tosses for more time.
Learning goals
- Perform a back set with full arm extension behind the head.
- Get under the ball before contact.
- Choose the set direction based on the call.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 9
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
The common mistake is leaning the whole body back and losing balance; the key is pushing the hips forward and extending the hands above the forehead. Rotate often so everyone gets reps in the middle.
