Bachata Partner Basics: Side Step and Turns
An introduction to bachata as a social dance: side step with a tap on count four, partner connection and simple turns. Students work on rhythm, leading and following, and talk about the Dominican roots of the dance and its role in today's social life.
How to play
- Spend 2 minutes on where bachata comes from and listen to one song, clapping the 4 counts and the final tap.
- With all students spread out, practice the side basic (right-together-right-tap, then the other way) for 4 minutes, first counting and then to music.
- Form pairs in open two-hand position; practice the basic together for 4 minutes, switching partners every song on the whistle.
- Introduce the forward-and-back basic and the transition from the side basic; 4 minutes of practice with partner changes.
- Teach the follower's simple underarm turn, led by a slight lift of the hand on count 4; 6 minutes of practice, switching roles.
- Each pair creates a 32-count sequence with what they learned and shows it to another pair, who gives one tip for improvement. 5 minutes.
Rules
- Anyone can lead or follow; switch roles every song.
- Ask your partner before using closed position; open position is the default.
- During the turn, the follower's hand spins freely on the fingers, no squeezing.
Variations
Easier
Dance only the side basic and the forward-and-back basic to slow music, no turns.
Standard
Combine side basic, forward-and-back and a simple turn into your own sequence.
Harder
Add a double turn and a side switch, and make the sequence 64 counts long.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility can dance seated, marking the basic with arms and torso while the partner travels side to side around them.
- Students with autism or shy students can dance the first songs without contact, mirroring a partner, and pick a familiar partner at first.
- Students who pick it up quickly act as support partners for those who need more time, rotating every song.
Learning goals
- Match the side basic and tap to the bachata beat.
- Lead and follow a simple turn with a light connection.
- Appreciate bachata as a cultural tradition and a way to stay active socially.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Stress that the tap on count four carries no weight; otherwise feet get crossed.
