Around the World Basketball Shooting Spots
Seven numbered spots form an arc around the basket, and each player moves to the next spot every time they score, working all the way around. Students practice shooting from different angles and distances and stick with a personal goal.
How to play
- At each basket, set 7 numbered poly spots in a semicircle 5 to 10 ft from the rim and make groups of 3 with one ball.
- Taking turns, each player shoots from spot 1; on a make, they shoot from spot 2 on their next turn.
- On a miss, they stay put or 'chance it' with a second shot: a make moves them up, a miss drops them back one spot.
- The two players not shooting rebound and chest pass the ball to the shooter.
- Anyone who reaches spot 7 works back to spot 1; each full trip earns a point.
- Play 3 rounds of 4 minutes; between rounds, each player names their hardest spot.
Rules
- Shoot with both feet next to the spot, never in front of it.
- One ball per group and one shooter at a time.
- The rebounder waits outside the lane until the ball comes down.
Variations
Easier
Use only 5 spots about 3 ft from the rim, or a lowered hoop.
Standard
Seven spots at 5 to 10 ft with the 'chance it' option.
Harder
Move the spots back and require bank shots from the sides.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: spots are set in an accessible line and a partner returns the ball.
- Visual impairment: a partner taps the backboard as a guide and spots are textured.
- Lower skill: the student uses a lighter ball and a closer arc.
Learning goals
- Adjust shooting power and direction from different angles.
- Set and work toward a personal goal.
- Support teammates as rebounder and passer.
Equipment for a class of 25
- youth basketballs: 9
- basketball hoops: 4
- poly spots: 28
Teacher tip
Cue students to point their toes at the basket on every spot; it is the classic mistake from the sides. In mixed groups, each player can use their own distance.
