Adventure Playground Movement Exploration
Learning environment where the gym becomes an adventure playground with mountains, bridges, tunnels, islands and rivers to explore freely and then with challenges. Students practice fundamental movement skills, independence and decision making.
How to play
- Before class, set up 5 zones: mountains (mats and wedges), bridges (benches), tunnels (hoops standing between cones), islands (hoops on the floor) and rivers (parallel ropes).
- Opening circle (3 min): introduce the playground and agree on three rules: equipment stays in place, no pushing, wait your turn.
- Free exploration (8 min): students go wherever they like and try ways of moving. The teacher watches and notes ideas without modeling.
- Share (3 min): several students show their discoveries, such as crawling across the bench, and the teacher adds challenges: no hands, backward, with a partner.
- Second exploration in pairs (8 min): each pair picks three challenges and tries them in different zones.
- Closing circle (3 min): each student points to a favorite zone and shares something new they did.
Rules
- Up to 5 students per zone; if it's full, find another.
- Don't move equipment out of place.
- Come down the mountains by rolling or sliding on your bottom, never diving.
- On the drum or a clap, everyone freezes.
Variations
Easier
Use only 3 zones with a guided idea card at each one.
Standard
Five zones with free exploration, sharing and partner challenges.
Harder
Pairs design a route through three zones and teach it to another pair.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a floor-level zone with wide tunnels and large islands, plus free choice of challenges.
- Shy students or students with autism: start in a quiet zone with a familiar partner and preview each stop.
- Fitness level: risk takers get control challenges, like going slowly; hesitant students get simple ones.
Learning goals
- Explore different ways to travel, jump, roll and balance.
- Decide what to try and how to do it safely.
- Share personal discoveries with the class.

Teacher tip
Your job is to watch and ask 'Is there another way?', not to correct. Jot down student ideas for the next lesson.
