Add-On Exercise Chain Jog
In groups of five jogging in a line, each student adds one dynamic move to a chain, and the group repeats the whole sequence before the next move gets added. Students build up intensity gradually while working on memory and teamwork.
How to play
- Make groups of five and mark a rectangle about 20 by 10 yards with four cones for each group.
- The group jogs in a line; at the first cone, the student in front calls a dynamic move, such as low high-knees, and the whole group does it to the next cone.
- The caller goes to the back of the line, and the new leader repeats the first move on the next side, then adds a new one on the side after that.
- The chain keeps growing: each lap repeats every move in order, one side each, and then a new one gets added.
- When the chain reaches five moves, the group runs through the whole thing twice at a quicker pace, about 7 minutes total.
- To finish, each group teaches its chain to the group next to it, which tries to copy it once in 2 minutes.
Rules
- No move can be repeated within the same chain.
- Order goes from easy to harder: early moves are gentle, later moves are livelier.
- If someone forgets a move, the group helps out loud; nobody gets called out.
- Safety: stay two steps behind the person in front so nobody gets their heels clipped.
Variations
Easier
A three-move chain, with the teacher listing ideas on a whiteboard.
Standard
A five-move chain, one per student, ordered by intensity.
Harder
Each new move has to target a different body area, and the group names it when it's added.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: shorten the route for that student, who can add arm and trunk moves the whole group does.
- Autism: write the chain on a whiteboard as it grows so there's visual support.
- Fitness level: students can walk one side between laps to recover.
Learning goals
- Remember and repeat a sequence of moves in order.
- Suggest warm-up moves that fit the phase the group is in.
- Work together so the whole group completes the chain.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
If groups get stuck, remind them to work from the feet up. Space the rectangles well apart so the lines don't cross.
