Adapted Sport Coaches: A Group-Designed, Student-Led Session
Each group prepares and leads an 8-minute block of an adapted sport (boccia, goalball, sitting volleyball, blind football…) for the rest of the class. It connects with real careers such as sports coach, adapted sport instructor or exercise science.
How to play
- Assignment and planning: six groups pick a sport and fill out a card with goal, key rule, safety and one adaptation (8 min).
- Led blocks: each group leads half the class for 4 minutes while another group leads the other half; three double rounds (24 min).
- Peer evaluation: each group gets two strengths and one improvement from its participants using a four-criteria rubric (5 min).
- Wrap-up: the teacher shows related pathways (coaching certifications, kinesiology and exercise science degrees, recreation and sports programs) (3 min).
Rules
- Every block includes a safety rule stated before starting.
- Explanations last 1 minute max.
- Use equipment as received and return it put away.
- Nobody laughs at the mistakes of classmates who are leading.
Variations
Easier
3-minute blocks with a template card.
Standard
4-minute blocks with their own card.
Harder
The group must include a two-level progression and adjust it live if it doesn't work.
Adaptations
- Student with adapted sport experience: can advise several groups if they want.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing student: the group prepares written visual support for its block.
- Shy student: handles equipment and safety in the group and leads only a short part.
Learning goals
- Plan and lead an adapted sport task.
- Give short, safe explanations.
- Know career paths in adapted sport.
Equipment for a class of 25
- boccia sets: 2
- bell balls: 2
- eye masks: 15
- volleyballs: 4
- cones: 20
- planning cards: 6
Teacher tip
Give notice the lesson before so they come with ideas. Two groups leading at once makes better use of time; you just run the clock and watch safety.
