Adapted Padel Mixer Tournament
An adapted padel tournament in mixer format: each round is played with a different partner and every player keeps their own running score. Students work on adjusting to new partners, communicating in doubles and keeping competition friendly.
How to play
- Set up six 33 x 20 ft courts (half volleyball courts work) with cones and low nets. Give each student a number and post the rotation chart on a whiteboard or handout (3 min).
- Each round lasts 4 minutes: four students play doubles on each court with the partner the chart shows. Serve underhand below the waist after a bounce, diagonally.
- Count every point: at the end of the round, each player records the points their team won as their own.
- On the whistle, everyone moves as the chart shows: new partner and new opponents. The one student sitting out each round keeps time and score (five rounds, 20 min).
- Wrap-up: add up individual points and also recognize the player who encouraged partners most (2 min).
Rules
- The ball must bounce once before it is hit, except at the net, where volleys are allowed.
- Before each point, partners agree on who covers the middle.
- Nobody crosses onto another court for a ball until play stops there.
Variations
Easier
5-minute rounds with two bounces allowed.
Standard
4-minute rounds with rotating partners and individual scores.
Harder
A team's points for the round only count if they win at least one point with a volley.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: always plays the net side while the partner covers the back.
- Autistic students: give them a printed rotation chart with their number highlighted.
- Lower fitness: may sit out one round as scorekeeper and keep their average score.
Learning goals
- Adapt to a different partner in each doubles round.
- Communicate with a new partner to cover the court.
- Compete respectfully with partners and opponents in a social tournament.
Equipment for a class of 25
- padel paddles: 24
- tennis balls: 24
- low nets: 6
- cones: 48
Teacher tip
Prepare the rotation chart before class to avoid confusion. Use a clear whistle signal for changes and allow a minute between rounds to move.
