Adapted Galotxa: Hand Hitting over the Rope
A school version of galotxa, a Valencian pelota style played in the street with a rope dividing the court. Teams send the ball back and forth by hand over the rope and keep score the traditional Valencian way.
How to play
- Setup: three courts with a rope stretched at the height of a tall person between fences or goals, sidelines marked with cones (4 min).
- Scoring: like other Valencian pelota styles, points go 15, 30, val and joc; reaching joc wins the game (3 min).
- Cooperative rally: each pair counts how many hits in a row over the rope they get with the pair across (6 min).
- 3v3 matches to three games, with a scorekeeper calling the score in Valencian and in English (14 min).
- Wrap-up: each team explains which strategy best helped them clear the rope (3 min).
Rules
- Hand hits only; no catching or holding the ball.
- The ball must go over the rope; if it touches it or goes under, the point goes to the opponents.
- Nobody hangs on or leans on the rope.
- The scorekeeper calls the score after every point.
Variations
Easier
Two touches per team and a lower rope.
Standard
One hit per team, high rope.
Harder
Hits must be volleys or on the first bounce, and the court is longer.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays near the rope with a teammate setting the ball up for their hit.
- Hearing impairment: the scorekeeper shows the score on large cards as well as calling it.
- Hesitant students: start in the cooperative rally and join the match when ready, keeping score in the meantime.
Learning goals
- Adjust force and trajectory to clear a rope.
- Use the Valencian pelota scoring system.
- Work as a team to keep and win the point.
Equipment for a class of 25
- ropes: 3
- foam balls: 6
- cones: 24
- score sheets: 3
Teacher tip
A clothesline or long jump rope tied between two goals works; check the knots first. Foam balls prevent hand pain on overhead hits.
