Actor's Body Scan: Releasing Tension After the Scene
Lying on mats, students mentally scan their body area by area, tense and release each one, and notice where they built up tension during the improv. It lowers arousal and teaches that actors also manage their tension.
How to play
- Lying face up, three slow breaths with one hand on the belly (1 min).
- The teacher guides from feet to head: tense each area for five seconds and release for ten, noticing the difference (3 min).
- Each student silently finds the area they tensed most during class (jaw, shoulders, hands) and moves it gently to release it (1 min).
- Students roll to one side to sit up slowly and, in a circle, each names in one word the area they noticed (2 min).
Rules
- Tense without reaching pain or maximum contraction.
- Silence during the scan; comments come at the end.
- Get up from the floor by rolling to the side, never all at once.
Variations
Easier
Work only four large areas: legs, abdomen, arms and face.
Standard
Guided scan of every area with tension and release.
Harder
Scan without tensing, using only attention and breathing, led by a student.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: does it seated in a wheelchair with back support.
- Hearing impairment: gets a card with the order of the areas beforehand, and with permission a light tap on the shoulder marks each change.
- Anxiety or autism: may keep eyes open and choose their spot in the room.
Learning goals
- Lower arousal after an intense expressive activity.
- Identify habitual tension areas in one's own body.
- Use a progressive relaxation technique that is useful outside class.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 30
Teacher tip
Speak in a slow, low voice and leave long pauses. Link the most-mentioned area to the tension of studying and exams.
