Accumulation and Subtraction: Building and Unbuilding a Phrase
Students compose with accumulation (1; 1-2; 1-2-3…) and its reverse, subtraction, a structure used in postmodern dance, for example by Trisha Brown. Groups mix these structures with staggered entrances.

How to play
- Each group of four creates six simple gestures numbered 1 to 6 (6 min).
- Accumulation: dance them as 1, 1-2, 1-2-3… up to six, all together (6 min).
- Subtraction: from the full phrase, drop gestures from the start (2-3-4-5-6, 3-4-5-6…) (5 min).
- Composition: the group decides who accumulates, who subtracts and who enters or exits at each moment, and sets a piece of about 90 seconds (9 min).
- Share in paired groups and discuss: what happens when you watch different structures at once (4 min).
Rules
- Gestures are short and can be repeated many times without tiring.
- Tape the entrance and exit zone on the floor.
- If you get lost, pick up the nearest gesture and keep going.
Variations
Easier
Four gestures, accumulation only.
Standard
Six gestures with accumulation and subtraction.
Harder
Add retrograde: dance the full phrase backward as the ending.
Adaptations
- Blind or low-vision students: the group counts numbers quietly during the phrase.
- Wheelchair users: gestures use arms, head and torso so they work for the whole group.
- Students who struggle with memory: post the numbered sequence on paper at the edge of the stage.
Learning goals
- Learn and apply accumulation and subtraction structures.
- Compose as a group by making structural choices.
- Memorize and perform sequences of increasing complexity.
Equipment for a class of 25
- speaker: 1
- masking tape: 1
Teacher tip
Music is optional: a steady beat makes it easier, but silence shows off the structure. Groups often pick gestures that are too long; six two-count gestures already make a dense piece.
