4-on-4 Volleyball with a Setter and Outside Attack
Small-court 4-on-4 games where each team has a setter at the net and builds the pass-set-hit sequence toward the outside hitter. Students work on position roles, receiving serve in a semicircle and communication.
How to play
- Set up three 6 x 12 m (20 x 40 ft) courts with the net at about 2.2 m (7 ft 2 in) and make teams of 4. The setter stands at the net between right front and middle (3 min).
- The other three receive in a semicircle: two back and one up on the left side, who is the hitter.
- Drill: a student serves underhand and the team passes, sets high to the outside and attacks; 10 tries per team (6 min).
- Play 4-on-4 to 15 with underhand serves; a point won after all three touches counts double (12 min).
- On each side-out the team rotates clockwise and the new right-front player becomes the setter.
- Wrap-up: each team shares how often it completed the sequence and what broke down (2 min).
Rules
- The setter does not take serve receive unless the ball comes straight to them.
- Call the ball out loud ("mine") before touching it.
- No going under the net or into the other court, to avoid ankle injuries.
- Serves may be taken from inside the court if students cannot reach from the end line.
Variations
Easier
The setter may catch and toss the ball to set.
Standard
Three-touch sequence with a fixed setter and an outside attack.
Harder
The setter chooses between the outside and a quick set to the middle to fool the block.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play setter, which needs less movement, with a lighter ball.
- Visual impairment: use a high-contrast ball and have teammates say their name before passing.
- Lower skill level: allow one bounce before the pass.
Learning goals
- Build an attack with the pass, set and hit.
- Take on the role of each position.
- Communicate out loud to organize play.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 6
- nets: 3
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
If passes do not reach the setter, have students pass high to the middle and let the setter move to the ball. Adjust net height to the group.
