Y-Drill Passing and Cutting for Soccer
A soccer-specific warm-up in groups of five on a Y-shaped cone setup: pass, check away with a cut, and receive with a directional first touch. It prepares the planting and changes of pace used in games while reviewing passing and receiving.
How to play
- Groups of 5 per setup: a start cone, a center cone about 11 yards away, and two cones forming the arms of the Y, about 9 yards from center on the diagonals. One ball per setup.
- Minutes 0-3: no ball. Each student jogs from start to center, plants, and breaks to one arm, then jogs back around the outside. Alternate sides.
- Minutes 3-6: with the ball. The starter passes to the center player and follows the pass; the center player returns it one-touch, turns, and cuts to an arm to receive a long pass. Everyone moves up one cone.
- Minutes 6-8: the center player picks the cut direction at the last moment, and the passer has to read it.
- Minutes 8-10: raise the pace to game speed and count how many full sequences the group completes in 2 minutes.
Rules
- Always rotate in the same direction so everyone plays every cone.
- Only one ball is live per setup to avoid getting hit.
- Cut off the outside foot with a bent knee, never with a stiff leg.
Variations
Easier
Allow two touches on every reception and shorten distances to about 7 yards.
Standard
One- or two-touch passes with a cut to the called side.
Harder
One-touch passing only, plus a passive defender in the center.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student takes the center cone as a fixed passer or plays with the hands.
- Autism: keep the same group every time and draw the route on a card.
- Beginners: use a softer ball and stay at a jogging pace.
Learning goals
- Warm up soccer-specific cutting with safe technique.
- Combine passing, checking away, and directional first touch on the move.
- Read a teammate's movement to time the pass.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 5
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
The common mistake is stopping dead before the cut; teach students to lower their hips before changing direction. Set up the cones before class so no time is lost.
