Wobbly Pins Fall Down Slowly
Kids are bowling pins standing on the mats; the teacher rolls a large ball very slowly, and the pins it passes or points to wobble and fall gently, then get back up. It builds balance, safe falling, and reaction.
How to play
- Push the mats together into one big carpet. Children stand on it, spread out and still like pins, arms at their sides (30 s).
- Show how a pin falls slowly: wobble, bend the knees, put hands down, and lie on the side. Everyone practices three times (1 min).
- Say: “When the ball rolls near you, wobble and fall down slowly.” Roll the large ball slowly between the pins (2 min).
- “Pins, stand up!” Everyone gets up and moves to a new spot on the carpet. Repeat with the ball on a different path.
- Special round: shout “Strike!” and all the pins fall at once, slowly and each in their own space (1 min).
- Wrap-up: the pins rise very slowly from lying down to standing and reach for the ceiling (1 min).
Rules
- Fall slowly: knees first, then hands, then your side.
- Each pin falls in its own space, never on anyone.
- Only the teacher rolls the ball, and it goes slowly.
- Fall only on the mats.
Variations
Easier
Pins fall to sitting, without lying down.
Standard
Full side fall when the ball rolls close.
Harder
Pins wait balancing on one foot or tiptoes before falling.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be a pin that sways from a wheelchair or sitting, or roll the ball with the teacher.
- Autism or sensory sensitivity: choose a spot on the edge of the carpet and fall only on the “Strike!” call.
- More skilled kids stand up without using hands; less skilled kids hear their name before the ball passes.
Learning goals
- Hold a still, balanced position.
- Learn to fall to the floor safely.
- React to something coming toward them.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 10
- large ball: 1
Teacher tip
Practice the fall before playing and always repeat it the same way. Space the pins well: they should be able to stretch their arms without touching.
