Add-On Dance Circle
In circles of 6, students take turns adding a four-count move, and the group repeats the whole sequence from the beginning with music, building a dance together. It warms up the body and develops movement memory and every student's participation.
How to play
- Circles of 6 spread out in general space. A song with a clear, steady beat plays (30 s).
- The first student suggests a four-count move (for example, four claps overhead), and the whole circle repeats it twice (1 min).
- The second student adds another four-count move; the circle repeats the first and second moves back to back. Continue until everyone has added one (3 min).
- Repeat the full 24-count routine two or three times in a row, with more energy each time (2 min).
- Each circle teaches its routine to a neighboring circle and they dance it together (2 min).
- Final round: all circles at once, one last full run-through (30 s).
Rules
- Each move lasts exactly four counts and must be doable for the whole circle.
- If someone goes blank, the group offers two ideas to choose from.
- Use safe moves: no cartwheels or jumping over classmates.
- Wait quietly while a classmate shares their move.
Variations
Easier
Moves in self-space with the teacher counting aloud.
Standard
Six four-count moves, one per student, repeated with music.
Harder
Eight-count moves that include traveling or a turn, with a faster song.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student suggests arm, head, or trunk moves that the whole circle does the same way.
- Autism or shyness: let the student choose a move from picture cards or go last.
- Fitness level: fitter students can add jumps or high knees to each move.
Learning goals
- Memorize and link a sequence of movements.
- Share their own ideas and accept classmates' ideas.
- Match movements to the beat of the music.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Place the circles away from the speaker so students can hear each other. If a circle gets stuck, help by counting "one, two, three, four" at each change.
