Who's Missing From the Circle?
With eyes closed, the group waits while the teacher hides a classmate under a large piece of fabric; when eyes open, everyone must figure out who's missing. It's a very calm memory and observation game that helps students learn names and brings back quiet at the end of class.
How to play
- Seat the class in 2 circles of 12-13, legs crossed, with a large piece of fabric spread in the middle of each circle (1 min).
- Before starting, each student slowly looks around the circle for 15 seconds to remember who's there and where they're sitting.
- On "Go to sleep!", everyone closes their eyes and rests their head on their knees; the teacher taps one student, who lies down in the middle and quietly covers up with the fabric.
- The rest of the circle silently shifts a little to close the gap; on "Wake up!", students open their eyes and raise a hand if they know who's missing.
- The first correct student whispers the name; the hidden student comes out slowly and helps the teacher choose the next one. Play 5-6 rounds (5 min).
Rules
- Really close your eyes and keep them closed until the signal.
- The hiding student moves slowly and doesn't step on anyone.
- Raise your hand first and say the name without shouting.
- The fabric never covers the face; leave the head peeking out toward the floor so you can breathe easily.
Variations
Easier
The circle doesn't shift, so the empty spot is a visible clue.
Standard
Hide one student and have the circle quietly shift before eyes open.
Harder
Hide two students at once, or also have two classmates swap seats.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: instead of hiding under the fabric, the student leaves the circle and waits behind a standing mat.
- Visual impairment: the student moves around the circle touching shoulders and hearing each classmate say "hi" to find who's missing.
- Shyness or fear of the dark: the student may hide with a buddy or act as the teacher's helper.
Learning goals
- Practice visual memory and observation of the group.
- Learn and use classmates' names.
- Stay quiet and still in order to relax.

Teacher tip
This is great at the start of the school year for learning names. Use a light, breathable fabric, and make sure no one feels bad if they aren't guessed; celebrate it as a great hiding job.
