Warm-Up Dance Cypher
In circles of six, students take turns stepping into the middle to show an 8-count dance move that the whole circle then copies, just like a street dance cypher. It gets bodies moving to music, sparks creativity, and helps students shake off self-consciousness.
How to play
- Make circles of six with about 3 feet between people. Play hip-hop or dance music at a medium tempo (about 100-110 BPM).
- First, 1 minute of a shared groove: the whole circle keeps the beat with a side step and claps.
- Taking turns clockwise, one student steps into the center and does an 8-count move (it can be simple: a sway, a turn, a step with arms).
- When they finish, they step back to their spot and the circle repeats the move twice while the next person gets ready.
- First round (3 min) with any moves; second round (3 min) where every move must include a level change (dip, light hop, or turn).
- Finish (1 min): the circle links all six moves back to back without stopping.
Rules
- Everyone copies every move with the same energy, no mocking.
- If you're stuck, repeat an earlier move with a small twist.
- Safety: no stunts, headspins, or high jumps in the center.
Variations
Easier
The teacher teaches four basic steps at the start, and each student picks one when it's their turn.
Standard
Each student invents an 8-count move that the circle copies twice.
Harder
Each new move must start from the ending position of the previous one to build a continuous routine.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student offers arm, trunk, and head moves from their wheelchair, and the circle copies them the same way.
- Shy students: they may step in with a partner and share the move.
- Hearing loss: a classmate shows the 8 counts with fingers or visible claps.
Learning goals
- Create simple dance moves that fit the musical beat.
- Accurately imitate movements suggested by others.
- Build confidence in self-expression through movement in front of the group.

Teacher tip
Let students suggest the music, but screen the lyrics. If a circle stalls, jump in with a very simple move to break the ice.
