Voice-Only Warm-Up Challenge
In groups of five, a leader runs the warm-up without demonstrating anything: they can only describe exercises in words and correct with precise language. Students build technical communication, active listening, and movement vocabulary.
How to play
- Groups of 5. The leader keeps hands behind the back: no gestures, no demos. Switch leaders every 2 minutes.
- Minutes 0-2: general warm-up described by direction, pace, and path (for example, side shuffle facing the wall, switching sides every four steps).
- Minutes 2-4: two mobility exercises naming the joint, direction, and reps. Minutes 4-6: one body-weight strength exercise with two technique cues.
- Minutes 6-8: a sequence of three linked movements the group memorizes and repeats three times.
- Minutes 8-10: verbally cued build-up sprints, then a quick talk about which words worked and which caused mistakes.
Rules
- If the leader gestures, they must explain again using different words.
- The group does exactly what it hears.
- If an instruction seems unsafe, anyone can call pause to clarify.
Variations
Easier
Allow one demonstration per exercise after two failed attempts.
Standard
Every turn is voice only, following the five rounds.
Harder
Three sentences max per exercise, and leaders must use terms like flexion or abduction.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student takes extra leader turns or does upper-body versions.
- Hearing impairment: in that group, the leader writes on a whiteboard or uses sign language.
- Shyness: the leader may read from a card prepared ahead of time.
Learning goals
- Describe exercises precisely using technical vocabulary.
- Interpret verbal instructions without visual support.
- Reflect on clear communication when leading a group.
Teacher tip
The laughs over misunderstandings are useful: bring them up in the debrief. Jot down confusing phrases you overhear to discuss with the whole class.
