Two in a Rowboat on the Lake
In pairs, sitting face to face and holding hands, children form a rowboat that rocks slowly on a calm lake while they sing softly. It builds slow breathing, shared rhythm and calm after activity.
How to play
- Find a partner, sit face to face with legs crossed or stretched out touching each other's feet, and hold hands (1 min).
- Row slowly: one leans back while the other leans forward, to the made-up song “Rock, rock, little boat, on the quiet lake we float” (1 min).
- Keep rowing even more slowly: breathe out leaning back and breathe in coming forward (1 min).
- A soft breeze blows: sway side to side without letting go, breathing deeply (1 min).
- The boat reaches the shore: let go, lie on your back and listen to the pretend water with eyes closed (1 min).
Rules
- Pull gently so the boat doesn't tip.
- Sing softly, like a sleepy lake.
- If your partner says “stop,” we stop.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the boat is the child and an adult, or three children in a little circle holding hands.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, pairs rock with the song.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the pair invents a new way to rock (in a circle, very slowly, one hand only) and shows the group.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the partner sits facing the wheelchair and the boat rocks using arms only.
- Autism: the child can rock alone hugging their knees, next to a pair.
- Hearing impairment: the rhythm comes from the partner's movement and eye contact.
Learning goals
- Breathe slowly in time with movement.
- Share a rhythm with a partner.
- Calm down at the end of the session.
Teacher tip
Demo very slowly with a child. If a pair pulls too hard, switch to “toy boat” and have them rock with just their shoulders.
