Turtle Race
A backward race: the winner is the last one to reach the finish line without ever stopping. Students learn to move very slowly and with control, keep their balance, and bring their heart rate down in a fun way.
How to play
- Use cones to mark a start line and a finish line about 25 ft apart; students line up at the start in 2 rows, about 3 ft apart (1 min).
- Explain the golden rule: always keep moving toward the finish, never stop and never step backward; anyone who stops or leaves their lane goes back to the start.
- First race (90 sec) walking: the winner is the last one across the finish line without ever stopping.
- Second race (90 sec) on hands and knees like turtles, keeping a flat back and moving one hand or knee at a time.
- Third race (90 sec) walking heel-to-toe with arms out like a tightrope walker.
- When done, everyone lies down behind the finish line like turtles in their shells and breathes slowly for 30 seconds.
Rules
- No stopping: a moving foot never hangs in the air for more than a second.
- Everyone moves in their own lane without touching classmates.
- No steps backward or sideways.
- Keep your eyes forward so you don't trip.
Variations
Easier
Shorten the course to 15 ft and allow one stop per race.
Standard
Three 25-ft races: walking, hands and knees, and heel-to-toe.
Harder
Carry a bean bag on your head or a hoop on an outstretched hand without dropping it as you go.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student in a wheelchair pushes the wheels as slowly as possible without stopping.
- Visual impairment: the student moves next to a partner who lightly touches their arm, along a lane marked with a rope on the ground.
- Balance level: anyone who needs it can do the third race with short normal steps instead of heel-to-toe.
Learning goals
- Control their movement speed on purpose.
- Keep their balance during very slow movements.
- Calm down after the main activity in a playful way.

Teacher tip
As students finish, make them judges (one per five students) to watch for stops. The tricky part is not stopping, so keep stressing that movement must be continuous.

Using the 5-4-3-2-1 technique, students calmly notice 5 things they can see, 4 they can hear, 3 they can touch, 2 they can smell and 1 they can taste.
Astronauts on the Moon Story
Students travel to the Moon as astronauts, where everything moves in slow motion because of low gravity, then return to Earth feeling heavy.
Back Drawing with Partner
In pairs, one student slowly draws a shape, letter or number on a partner's back with a finger, and the partner guesses it before roles switch.
Back-to-Back Ball Pass Stretch
Sitting back to back in pairs, students pass a foam ball with trunk twists, overhead and between the legs, always slowly and with steady breathing.
Ball Explorer Body Guess
