Tucking the Garden In
In pairs, one child is a garden bed lying down and the other is the gardener who covers them with fabric like straw mulch and whispers what's planted in each part of their body. Kids practice body awareness, calm, and gentle care for a partner.
How to play
- Explain that at the end of the day, the gardener covers the soil with straw to keep it warm; in pairs, one child is the bed and lies on their back (1 min).
- The gardener spreads the fabric from feet to shoulders and smooths it slowly with open palms (1 min).
- The bed breathes calmly while the gardener whispers what's planted there: carrots in the legs, lettuce on the tummy, strawberries in the hands (1 min).
- Switch roles and tuck in again (2 min).
- Fold the fabric together and put it in the basket (1 min).
Rules
- The fabric never covers the face.
- The gardener speaks softly and smooths slowly.
- The bed stays still and listens.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher tucks in several kids at once and names the plants.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, work in pairs and choose any plants.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the gardener names a body part and the bed wiggles it a little ("the strawberries in your right hand are moving").
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the bed can sit in the wheelchair with the fabric over the legs.
- Autism or touch sensitivity: the child can choose to be only the gardener or tuck themselves in.
- Visual impairment: the gardener gives a heads-up before placing the fabric and names each body part when touching it.
Learning goals
- Notice body parts while at rest.
- Calm down with a slow pace.
- Care for a partner with gentle gestures.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Fabric pieces: 13
Teacher tip
Use light fabric or large scarves, never plastic. Give the instructions in a soft voice from the very start so your tone sets the calm.
