Tray Drums on the Move
Each child turns a plastic tray into a drum and walks around the room tapping one beat per step, slower or faster to the teacher's rhythm. It builds matching movement to a beat and listening skills.
How to play
- Each child takes a tray and tries it as a drum: tap with the palm, the fingertips and the knuckles (1 min).
- The teacher plays a slow beat on a tray, and we walk, tapping once on our tray for every step (1 min).
- When the beat speeds up, we jog and tap fast; when it slows down, we walk again (2 min).
- "Trays up!" Stretch and tap above your head; "Trays down!" Crouch and tap near the floor (1 min).
- Do one big drumroll together, then stop in silence, hugging the tray (1 min).
Rules
- I tap my own tray, not my friends'.
- I tap with my hand and never hit anything with the tray.
- When the teacher stops, my tray goes quiet.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, just walk and tap, with only a few clear tempo changes.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, switch between slow and fast and add up and down.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, echo short patterns of two and three taps ("ta-ta," "ta-ta-ta") while walking.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: the teacher moves their arm in a big, visible way and holds the tray up high to stop; resting a hand on the tray helps feel the vibration.
- Autism or noise sensitivity: offer headphones or let the child tap with soft "cotton fingers."
- Limited mobility: rest the tray on the lap and drum from the wheelchair while a buddy walks alongside.
Learning goals
- Match steps to a beat.
- Tell slow from fast.
- Activate listening attention.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Plastic trays: 25
Teacher tip
Sturdy plastic takeout trays or stiff foam trays with no broken edges work well. Twenty-five trays get very loud, so mix in some "cotton hands" moments.
