Traveling Trio Toss
In groups of three, students jog side by side across the blacktop while passing a foam ball without letting it hit the ground. Students work on passing and catching on the move, adjusting distance, and communicating with teammates.
How to play
- Make groups of three with one foam ball each; mark two lines 20 yards apart with cones and set the trios on one line, about 5 yards from other groups (1 min).
- Walking: the three move forward side by side about 3 yards apart; the middle student passes to one side and gets it back, then to the other side; down to the far line and back (2 min).
- Jogging: anyone can pass to anyone, always leading the receiver so they do not have to slow down (2 min).
- Pass challenge: on each 20-yard trip, the trio tries to beat its record for passes without a drop; if the ball drops, pick it up and start counting from zero (2 min).
- Weave: after passing, the passer cuts behind the receiver and changes lanes; two trips walking and two jogging (2 min).
Rules
- Pass underhand, aiming at the receiver's chest.
- Say the receiver's name before you pass.
- Each trio stays in its lane and looks back when turning around so nobody collides.
- No throwing at faces and no hard throws.
Variations
Easier
Do everything at a walk with a large foam ball.
Standard
Jog 20 yards in trios, leading the receiver with every pass.
Harder
Add the weave with lane changes or use two balls at once.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student takes the middle lane and moves at their own pace while partners match the speed.
- Hearing impairment or shyness: replace calling a name with an open-hands signal to ask for the ball.
- Skill level: confident trios spread out to 4–5 yards; trios that struggle stay about 2 yards apart.
Learning goals
- Pass and catch a ball while moving.
- Match the pass to a partner's speed and position.
- Communicate to coordinate the group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Foam balls: 9
- Cones: 8
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is passing to where the partner is instead of where they will be, so keep repeating "lead your partner." Mix skill levels in each trio so there is always a solid passer.
