Traveling 5v2 Rondo: The Square Moves Across the Field
A five-versus-two rondo where, on the signal, the whole group moves while keeping possession until it reaches a new square marked a few meters away. It warms players up gradually and forces them to readjust spacing and support while moving.
How to play
- For each group of seven, mark two 10 x 10 m squares with a 10-meter corridor between them (2 min).
- Static 5v2 rondo in the first square, two-touch; whoever loses the ball goes in to defend (3 min).
- On the whistle, the group must move possession to the other square by passing, never dribbling more than three touches in a row (3 min).
- Once in the new square, play one-touch for a minute before the next move (2 min).
Rules
- Defenders pressure without tackling from behind or sliding.
- If the ball goes out during the move, the group returns to the starting square.
- The player on the ball must have at least two open passing lanes.
- Groups move side by side, never crossing another group.
Variations
Easier
5v1 rondo and walk during the move.
Standard
Two-touch 5v2 rondo with a light jog during the move.
Harder
One-touch 5v2 rondo and the move must be done in under 15 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: holds a fixed corner of the square and the group moves the rondo toward that player.
- Hearing impairment: the move is signaled by raising a yellow pinnie as well as the whistle.
- Autism: always placed in the same group and at the same starting corner.
Learning goals
- Keep possession by adjusting support distances.
- Advance as a coordinated group with the ball.
- Warm up gradually through a small-sided game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 16
- balls: 5
- pinnies: 10
Teacher tip
It is a great bridge into positional play: ask what changes when the square moves and fixed reference points disappear.
