Today I Travel By… Switch!
The teacher holds up a vehicle card and everyone moves around imitating it until the card changes. It builds attention, quick switching between movements and an all-around warm-up.
How to play
- Show the cards and their moves: train (arms like wheels turning and “choo-choo”), plane (arms spread), boat (slow rocking), bike (pedaling with high knees) and rocket (crouch, then jump up) (2 min).
- The teacher holds up a card and everyone travels that way, slowly, looking for open space (1 min).
- When the drum sounds, the teacher changes the card and we switch vehicles right away; the switches get quicker and quicker (1 min).
- Now the teacher only makes the vehicle's sound without the card (“vroom!” “choo-choo!”) and we guess by moving (1 min).
- Last trip: the rocket blasts off with everyone together and we land sitting down (1 min).
Rules
- Look at the card before you go.
- Every vehicle keeps to its own space, no crashing.
- When the drum sounds, switch fast.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use three vehicles (train, plane, boat) and slow switches.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use five vehicles and switch more often.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the teacher shows two cards: one for the arms and one for the legs (plane arms and bike legs at the same time).
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: act out the vehicles with arms and trunk, moving in the wheelchair if possible.
- Hearing impairment: signal the switch only with the card, not the drum.
- Autism: use the same cards in the same order the first time.
Learning goals
- Warm up with varied ways of moving.
- Switch movements on a visual or sound cue.
- Match each vehicle to a movement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Vehicle picture cards: 5
- Hand drum: 1
Teacher tip
Large laminated cards last for years and work for every travel story. The usual mistake is kids standing still staring at the card, so act out the vehicle yourself as you show it.
