Tickly Ant Body Wake-Up
An imaginary little ant walks over the body, and every part it touches wakes up and moves: shake the hand, turn the head, kick the feet. Kids build body awareness and gently warm up every joint.
How to play
- Children sit in a circle with legs straight out. Show an invisible ant on your finger: “Look, her name is Annie and she wants to walk on our bodies.”
- “Annie climbs up your hand”: everyone walks two fingers over their hand, then shakes it hard to wake it up (30 s).
- Keep going: elbow (bend and straighten), shoulders (up and down), head (slow yes and no), tummy (big breath), knees (bend), and feet (kick) (2 min).
- “Annie wants to go down and walk around”: everyone stands and walks like little ants with tiny quick steps (1 min).
- Call out a body part and everyone shakes it while walking: “The ant is on your back!” (1 min).
- Wrap-up: Annie goes back home on your finger and everyone blows her a goodbye (30 s).
Rules
- Move each part slowly and gently.
- The head moves very softly, never fast.
- Walk like ants without bumping into anyone.
- Each child touches only their own body.
Variations
Easier
Only hands, head, tummy, and feet, with the teacher touching each part on their own body.
Standard
Full body tour sitting, then the ant walk.
Harder
Add less familiar parts like ankle, wrist, or hip, and start with one side of the body.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do everything seated and replace the ant walk with waving arms like antennae.
- Autism or touch sensitivity: no one touches anyone else; each child chooses to touch with a finger or just move the part.
- More skilled kids name the part before you do; less skilled kids point to it on a body poster.
Learning goals
- Identify and name body parts.
- Move joints gently and with awareness.
- Wake up the body step by step before play.
Teacher tip
Speak softly and mysteriously: an imaginary ant grabs their attention in seconds. Always use the same body part names so they learn them.
