The Whistle Flips Possession: Two-Ball Transition Warm-Up
Two teams pass in half court, and on the whistle the team with the ball switches to defense while the other team breaks toward the far goal. It gets the body ready for changes of pace and trains the mental switch of transition.
How to play
- Easy jogging mobility around the court: high knees, butt kicks, hip openers and arm circles (2 min).
- 5v3 passing keep-away in half court with one ball, no dribbling; the three defenders only intercept, no body contact (2 min).
- On the whistle, the team with the ball becomes the defense and must sprint back to its half; the other team gets a second ball from the teacher and attacks the far goal with no more than two passes (4 min).
- Final round at full speed, switching roles each rep; count the breaks that end in a shot within five seconds (2 min).
Rules
- The break ends with a shot on an empty goal from outside the 6-meter area.
- No grabbing or pushing on defense; you only go for the ball.
- Anyone not in the rep waits off the court behind the cones.
- Only one ball is ever live: the keep-away ball is dropped as soon as the whistle blows.
Variations
Easier
5v2 keep-away and a break with no recovering defenders.
Standard
5v3 keep-away with defenders recovering after the whistle.
Harder
The teacher points to one goal or the other at the last second to change the direction of the break.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: pair the whistle with a clear visual cue, like raising a colored pinnie.
- Students with limited mobility: feed the second ball and decide who gets the first pass.
- Students with low endurance: join every other transition rep.
Learning goals
- Raise heart rate with progressive changes of pace.
- Cut reaction time when switching from offense to defense.
- Make the fastest passing decision after winning the ball.
Equipment for a class of 25
- handballs: 4
- pinnies: 15
- cones: 8
- whistle: 1
Teacher tip
Soft foam balls work if you don't have enough handballs. The typical mistake is the team that lost the ball just standing there: shout "Get back!" the first few times until they do it on their own.
