The Welcome Snail Spiral
Holding hands behind the teacher, the group winds into a spiral like a snail while chanting a welcome rhyme, then unwinds. It opens each session with a repeated ritual and builds rhythm and contact with classmates.
How to play
- In a line holding hands, the teacher leads and chants: "Little snail, little snail, curl up slow inside your shell" (1 min).
- The teacher walks in smaller and smaller circles until the line is wound up close together (1 min).
- In the middle of the snail we stop, say "Hello, friends!" and give hands a gentle squeeze (1 min).
- The teacher turns around and unwinds the snail chanting "Little snail, little snail, come out slowly from your shell" (1 min).
- Do the whole snail once more, a little faster, and end in a circle (2 min).
Rules
- We don't let go of hands.
- We follow the person in front, no passing.
- When we wind up, we walk slowly so no one gets stepped on.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use small snails with an adult at each end; if someone doesn't want to hold hands, they can hold the shirt of the child in front.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, the whole group makes one snail and does it twice.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, a child leads the snail holding the teacher's hand, and the pace changes when unwinding.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child in the wheelchair is the center of the snail and the group winds around them.
- Autism: the child can walk at the end of the line holding the adult's hand, where there's the least squeezing.
- Visual impairment: the classmate's hand guides them; say out loud when the snail stops.
Learning goals
- Start the session with a comforting ritual.
- Move as a group along a spiral path.
- Keep step with a rhythmic chant.
Teacher tip
Do it the same way every day of the transition period; by day three they line up on their own. The usual mistake is turning too fast so the tail lets go; go very slowly at the end.
