The Soap Dance: Palms, Backs and Thumbs
Children turn each step of handwashing into a dance that moves the whole body: rubbing palms, backs of hands, fingers and thumbs while traveling around the space. It warms up the body and teaches the handwashing sequence.
How to play
- In a circle, turn on a pretend faucet, wet hands and pump pretend soap saying “pssh, pssh” (1 min).
- Palms: rub hands hard while walking all over the space; the more you rub, the more bubbles and the faster you walk (1 min).
- Backs: one hand scrubs the back of the other while doing little hops, then switch hands (1 min).
- Fingers and thumbs: lace fingers together and twist each thumb like a crank while spinning in place (1 min).
- Rinse: shake hands, arms, head and whole body as if water were splashing off (1 min).
- Dry: rub down with a giant pretend towel from arms to feet and finish with clean hands up high (1 min).
Rules
- Your hands scrub your own hands, not a friend's.
- Walk into empty spaces, no bumping.
- When the teacher turns off the faucet, we freeze.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use only palms, backs and rinse, with the teacher modeling each move alongside them.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, do all five steps and change how you travel for each one: walk, hop, spin.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, remember the order on their own: the teacher asks “What’s next?” and the group names the step before doing it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do it seated or in a wheelchair with hand and arm moves, traveling only if possible.
- Autism: picture cards of the handwashing steps in order, the same ones posted by the classroom sink.
- Hearing loss: show “faucet off” with a big, visible twisting hand gesture.
Learning goals
- Warm up arms, legs and trunk before play.
- Learn the steps of good handwashing.
- Stop and start on a signal.
Teacher tip
Use the same words and pictures you have at the classroom sink so the dance becomes a real reminder. The usual mistake is gentle rubbing: call for “big bubbles!” to get some energy in.
