The Sneaker Parking Lot
When they arrive in the movement room, children take off their sneakers and park them in pairs in parking spots taped on the floor, like cars. It builds self-care, fine motor skills and a calm transition into class.
How to play
- On arrival, children sit on the bench or floor by the wall, facing the taped parking spots (1 min).
- Start the engine, “vroom,” and each child takes off one shoe, then the other, slowly and on their own if they can (2 min).
- Carry the pair together like a car with a trailer and park it inside a spot with the toes facing the wall (1 min).
- The teacher walks by as the parking attendant; if a pair is crooked, its owner straightens it (1 min).
- In socks, tiptoe over to the circle and feel the floor (1 min).
Rules
- Each shoe stays with its partner.
- Park inside the lines without touching your neighbor's car.
- If a friend can't open their strap, we can help.
- In socks we walk, we don't run.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, spots have each child's photo and the teacher helps with straps.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, children choose any free spot and take off shoes on their own.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, they also put shoes back on alone after class and hang their jacket on its hook.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility or orthotics: the child keeps their shoes on and parks another personal item, like a water bottle.
- Autism: always use the same spot with the child's photo and a picture schedule of the steps.
- Less hand dexterity: Velcro shoes and an adult beside them for the first strap.
Learning goals
- Take off shoes with growing independence.
- Place objects inside a marked space.
- Make a calm transition into the room.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Colored tape: 1
Teacher tip
Before class, tape a row of rectangles along the wall. Ask families to send non-slip socks; if the floor is cold or slippery, do the routine with jackets and backpacks instead.
