The Slow Tunnel to the Quiet Cave
A fabric tunnel leads to a cave built from mats with a sheet over the top; children crawl through in slow motion and, once inside, lie down in the dim light to listen to music and breathe. It brings the class back to calm with slow movement and rest.
How to play
- The teacher shows the way: the tunnel, and at the end, the quiet cave with a sheet for a roof; inside, we whisper (1 min).
- We crawl through the tunnel in slow motion, one at a time, like snails (2 min).
- In the cave we lie on our backs, each in our own spot on the mats (1 min).
- We listen to the music with eyes closed and a hand on our tummy, feeling it rise and fall (2 min).
- The teacher slowly lifts the sheet like the sun coming up, and we sit up stretching (1 min).
Rules
- In the tunnel I go slow like a snail.
- In the cave we whisper or stay quiet.
- I lie in my spot without touching anyone.
- I come out when the sun comes up.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, a short tunnel and the sheet lifted on one side to let light in.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, a long tunnel and the sheet over the whole cave.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, a short guided relaxation in the cave: squeeze and release hands, feet, and face.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child enters the cave through an open side and lies down or stays in the wheelchair next to the sheet.
- Autism or fear of the dark: a spot near the entrance with light, and the option to watch from outside.
- Hearing impairment: instead of music, the teacher strokes the sheet gently to show the breathing rhythm.
Learning goals
- Move very slowly with control.
- Relax in a cozy space.
- Breathe calmly at the end of the session.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Fabric play tunnels: 1
- Large bedsheet: 1
- Mats: 4
- Soft music
Teacher tip
Build the cave with two chairs or tables and the sheet over the top, leaving the sides partly open. Staggered arrivals keep things calm: the first child is already lying down when the last one comes in.
