The Shrinking Circle Celebration
After the relays, the class forms a big circle holding hands and slowly shrinks it with each breath until it becomes a group hug. It practices cooling down, breathing and sharing the joy of a group achievement.
How to play
- Make a very big circle, holding hands with arms stretched out (1 min).
- The teacher quietly recalls what we did together: “Today we filled, passed and carried… all of us together” (1 min).
- Each time we breathe out slowly, we take one tiny step toward the middle and the circle shrinks (1 min).
- When we're very close, we share a gentle group hug and whisper “We did it!” (1 min).
- Let go, step back and sit down slowly on the floor with eyes closed (1 min).
Rules
- Tiny steps, no pushing.
- I breathe slowly, like smelling a flower.
- The hug is gentle; if I don't want a hug, I hold hands.
- We talk quietly.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher holds hands with the wiggliest kids and we take just three steps.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, one step per breath, as described.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, a child chooses the word we whisper to celebrate.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the circle shrinks toward the child's wheelchair in the center, and classmates come to them.
- Autism: the child can stay out of the hug, holding a friend's hand or hugging themselves.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher shows each breath by raising and lowering the arms.
Learning goals
- Lower heart rate with slow breathing.
- Celebrate a group achievement calmly.
- Respect each classmate's space and wishes.
Teacher tip
Drop your voice way down so the group settles. The circle tends to collapse all at once, so lead each step yourself and wait for everyone.
