The Seed Sleeps Under the Soil
In pairs, one child is a sleeping seed curled into a ball and the other is the weather taking care of it: fingertip rain on the back, warm sun with the palms and a gentle breeze. Kids work on relaxing and caring for a partner.
How to play
- In pairs, one curls up kneeling with their forehead on the floor: the seed sleeping under the soil (1 min).
- Gentle rain: the partner taps softly with fingertips all over their back (1 min).
- Sun: they rest their palms still on the back to warm it up, then slide them slowly from top to bottom (1 min).
- Breeze: they blow very softly on the back of the neck, and the seed slowly pokes out an arm like a little leaf (1 min).
- Switch roles and repeat rain, sun and breeze (2 min).
Rules
- I touch my partner very gently.
- If my seed doesn't like it, I stop.
- The seed is asleep: no talking.
- I make rain on the back, never on the head or face.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher shows rain and sun on a stuffed animal and each child does it on their own stuffed animal.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, in pairs with rain, sun and breeze.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the partner adds a gentle storm (cupped-hand pats) before calm returns.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the seed stays seated in the wheelchair leaning forward, or lies face down on a mat.
- Autism: if touch isn't OK, they do the massage on a stuffed animal or with a soft ball on the back.
- Hearing loss: the teacher shows pictures of rain, sun and breeze to mark each stage.
Learning goals
- Relax after physical activity.
- Give and receive respectful touch.
- Tell the difference between soft and strong touch.
Teacher tip
Always have the partner ask the seed if they want the massage first; teaching kids to ask permission is part of the game. Play very soft music and dim the lights if you can.
