The Scarf Listens to the Music
Children dance with their scarf and match the movement to the music: with slow music the scarf floats in big waves, with fast music it shakes, and in the silence it hides. It warms up the body while working on listening and matching movement to rhythm.
How to play
- Everyone holds a scarf; listen to a bit of slow music and a bit of fast music and say which is which (1 min).
- With slow music, the scarf floats: draw big waves and walk slowly around the room (2 min).
- With fast music, the scarf gets jittery: shake it and take quick little steps or hops (2 min).
- When the music stops, hide the scarf behind your back and freeze like a statue (1 min).
- One last very slow song plays and we let the scarf settle to the floor as we crouch down with it (1 min).
Rules
- Listen to the music to know how to dance.
- Dance in your own space without hitting anyone with your scarf.
- In the silence, scarf hidden and body still.
- Your scarf is just for you.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher dances along and calls it out: “Slow!”, “Fast!”, “Quiet!”
Standard
For 4-year-olds, kids change their movement on their own when they hear the music change.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, add marching music where the scarf becomes a flag and children march with high knees.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: the teacher pairs each type of music with a gesture or a color card (blue slow, red fast, white silence).
- Limited mobility: the child dances with the scarf from their wheelchair using arms and trunk, and hides it in their lap during the silence.
- Autism: keep the volume low and show the card before the fast music starts.
Learning goals
- Warm up the body with continuous movement.
- Match the speed of movement to the rhythm of the music.
- Respond to silence by stopping.
Equipment for a class of 25
- fabric scarves: 25

Teacher tip
Prepare a playlist of short slow and fast instrumental clips so you can switch without searching. The usual slip is racing around the whole room during fast music: ask for “fast, but in your own little house.”
