The Quiet Box Goes Around
Sitting in a circle, children slowly pass a closed box that “holds the quiet”: whoever has it takes a deep breath, holds it to their ear, and passes it on without a sound. It lowers energy and works on breathing and turn-taking.
How to play
- We sit in a circle; the teacher shows the box: “The quiet lives inside, and if we make noise it escapes” (1 min).
- The teacher holds it to their ear, breathes deeply with eyes closed, and passes it to the next child with both hands (1 min).
- The box goes around the circle: each child takes one deep breath, listens, and passes it silently (2 min).
- When it gets back to the teacher, we all put hands on our tummies and breathe together three times (1 min).
Rules
- I pass the box slowly with both hands.
- While the box travels, nobody talks.
- I wait until it reaches me; I don't grab it early.
- If I don't want to listen, I still pass it gently.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, small circles of 6 to 8 kids with an adult in each.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, one whole-class circle.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the box goes around with eyes closed, and each child takes one long breath to a count of four while holding it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: classmates bring the box to the child's hands or rest it on their lap.
- Autism: the child may hold the box longer if it's calming, or pass it without listening.
- Visual impairment: the classmate touches their arm before handing over the box.
Learning goals
- Calm down with slow breathing.
- Keep group quiet for a little while.
- Wait for a turn patiently.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Small cardboard box: 1
Teacher tip
A pretty box (covered or decorated) adds a lot of magic. If someone breaks the silence, don't scold; just say “Oops, a little bit escaped!” and keep going.
