The Painted Bird on the Lemon Branch
A slow ring game with the traditional song "Estaba la pájara pinta," in which one child is the painted bird in the middle and everyone kneels and stands slowly with the lyrics. It builds body control going down and up and helps the group calm down through song.
How to play
- Sitting in a circle, the teacher slowly sings the Spanish song ("The painted bird sat on her green lemon tree; with her beak she picks the branch, with the branch she picks the flower") (1 min).
- One child crouches in the middle as the perched bird; the circle walks very slowly while singing, and the bird makes a beak with one hand to pick the branch and the flower (2 min).
- On the line "I kneel down… I stand up steady, steady," the whole circle kneels very slowly and rises little by little, without hands if possible (1 min).
- On "Give me your hand, give me the other," the bird holds hands with someone in the circle; instead of the traditional kiss we sing "give me a butterfly hug," and that friend becomes the new bird (2 min).
- Last round sitting down: move only the arms like wings, slower and slower, until we're still with eyes closed (1 min).
Rules
- The circle walks slowly, as if the bird were sleeping.
- We kneel and stand carefully, no flopping down.
- The butterfly hug is gentle, or hands on your own chest if you don't want to touch.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the circle doesn't move: everyone is a bird sitting down, copying the teacher's gestures.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, one bird in the middle while the circle kneels and stands with the song.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, stand up from the floor without using hands, with two birds in the middle.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: instead of kneeling, lean the upper body forward and slowly sit back up tall.
- Autism: the child can stay in the circle doing the beak and wing gestures without going to the middle.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher pairs each part of the song with a set gesture (beak, flower, knees, hands, wings).
Learning goals
- Control the body while going down to and up from the floor.
- Calm down with a slow ring game.
- Learn a traditional song sung in both Mexico and Spain.
Teacher tip
The traditional lyric ends with "give me a little kiss on the mouth"; at school we swap it for a butterfly hug (arms crossed over your own chest). The slower you sing, the calmer the group leaves.
