How to play
- With calm music, breathe deeply with your noodle lying beside you (1 min).
- The turtle goes for a walk: push it very slowly with the noodle along the rope (2 min).
- The turtle stops to look at the flowers: keep the noodle still and breathe (1 min).
- Arrive home and leave the turtle at the end of the rope (1 min).
- Lie down like turtles tucked in their shells and rest (1 min).
Rules
- Turtles go very, very slowly.
- I push gently, no whacking.
- I talk softly so I don't scare the turtles.
- Each turtle stays on its own path.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, a short straight path; pushing the turtle by hand is fine.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, a path with one curve.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, a spiral path, and the turtle can't touch the rope.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a short noodle and a path right beside them, on a table if needed.
- Visual impairment: a thick rope they can feel with a foot and the noodle.
- Autism or high arousal: offer to do it next to the teacher with the lights dimmed.
Learning goals
- Lower pace and arousal.
- Control slow, precise movements.
- Link breathing with calm.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Pool noodles: 25
- Foam balls: 25
- Ropes: 4
- Calm music
Teacher tip
Dim the lights if you're indoors and talk more and more slowly. If someone starts rushing, their turtle becomes a "sleepy turtle" pushed with just one finger.
