The Newspaper Blanket
In pairs, one child lies down and the other gently covers them with newspaper sheets like a blanket, then very slowly uncovers them. Children work on relaxing, feeling their bodies and being gentle with a partner.
How to play
- In pairs: one lies on their back with eyes closed, and the other holds three or four sheets (1 min).
- With soft music, the partner slowly covers the feet first, then the legs (1 min).
- Then the tummy and arms, laying each sheet down gently and never over the face (1 min).
- The covered child feels the light weight of the paper and breathes calmly while the partner sits quietly beside them (1 min).
- The partner uncovers very slowly, one sheet at a time, then switch roles (2 min).
Rules
- Never cover the face.
- Cover and uncover very slowly and quietly.
- If someone doesn't want to be covered, they can just hold a sheet.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher covers several children at once, with just one or two sheets each.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, in pairs with three sheets, quietly naming each body part as it's covered.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the covered child guesses with eyes closed which part is being covered.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: cover the legs and arms while the child sits in the wheelchair, or lying on a mat with help.
- Autism or dislike of touch: the child covers themselves bit by bit while lying down, or only the feet are covered.
- Hearing impairment: before starting, point to each part that will be covered and agree on a gentle shoulder tap to switch.
Learning goals
- Relax the body and breathing at the end of the session.
- Notice different body parts through touch.
- Treat a partner gently.
Equipment for a class of 25
- newspaper sheets: 50
- music
Teacher tip
Use whatever whole sheets are left from the session. Explain the face rule very clearly beforehand, and walk among the pairs to help anyone covering too quickly.
